Summary
A teacher is one who guides, teaches, and informs students
in a way to promote learning. He/She
must do this by direct teaching contact with students, the provision of coherent
and planned lessons and learning activities, by participating in other teaching
related activities, and the performance of any additional duty assigned by the
principal in accordance with the state system requirements and school council
policies.

Essential Functions
- Undertake
direct teaching of groups of students and individual students as determined
by the principal.
- Plan
and implement a program of instruction that adheres to the district
philosophy, goals and objectives as outlined in the adopted course study.
- Assign
course related assignments to students.
- Evaluate
student’s needs, abilities and readiness.
- Create
and manage a classroom environment, which is conducive to learning and
appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
- Demonstrate
high quality teaching skills, which enable all students to achieve their
full potential.
- Distribute
tests and homework assignments, and collect them when they are completed.
- Grade
homework and tests, and compute and record results, using answer sheets or
electronic marking devices.
- Refer
attendance, health, and psychological/emotional problems to principal,
school counselor and/or nurse.
- Plan
according to established goals.
- Assess
student’s academic and personal growth.
- Undertake
other non-teaching supervisory duties.
- Evaluate
accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment
methods such as teacher made tests, samples of students' work, mastery
skills check lists, criterion-referenced tests and norm-referenced tests.
- Implement
and evaluate curriculum initiatives.
- Encourage
student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good
study habits.
- Participate
in various activities such as parent/teacher meetings, staff meetings,
camps, and trips.
- Contribute
to the development, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum program.
- Participate
in school decision-making processes and professional development activities.
- Demonstrate
commitment and capacity to actively contribute to a broad range of
activities.
- Demonstrate
the ability to reflect critically upon his/her professional practice.
- Participate
in professional development activities.
- Prepares
substitute folder containing appropriate information as required by the
principal.
- Participate
co-operatively and assist other members of the faculty to promote the
learning area within the school system.
- Assist
student teachers in the development of their teaching skills.
- Collect
money from students for school-related projects.
- Plan
and prescribes purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals, tutors and
volunteers as needed.
- Recognize
any learning problems and make referrals as appropriate.
- Demonstrate
a strong grasp and understanding of the subject matter being taught.
- Respect
the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents,
and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and
federal laws.
- Take
necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,
materials and facilities.
- Share
supervision responsibilities during the school day for the students in all
areas of the school.
- Maintain
appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and
appropriate use of conference and planning time.
- Work
cooperatively and efficiently with parents to strengthen the educational
program for their children.
- Establish
and maintain cooperative relationships with other staff members.
- Work
collaboratively to achieve the overall purposes of the school program.
- Undertake
various other classroom teaching related and organizational duties as
determined by the principal.

Essential Job Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be
able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
A teacher must have a love for children and teaching.
He/She must demonstrate the necessary skills to supervise, guide, and
teach students, while acting as a role model and mentor.
The teacher’s job is to assure that all students learn the
basic and essential skills at each grade level, while contributing to the
building of confidence and self esteem with students. He/She must show sensitivity to students’ problems
and the capacity to develop strategies to assist student needs.
A teacher must also demonstrated high level of communication and interpersonal
skills when relating to students, parents and other teachers.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s
degree in education or related field.
- At
least 1 year of teaching experience.
- Experience/strength
in content area.
- State
teaching certificate in subject area of instruction.
- Knowledge
of and/or willingness to learn current educational practices.
- Experience
and/or passion for working with students and experience and knowledge of
community resources.
- Excellent
verbal and written English skills.
- Competency
in basic math. (Higher knowledge and skills are necessary for Math Teachers)
- Ability
to solve problems and manage diversity.
- Proficient
in basic use of personal computers.
- Experienced
in working with children and young adults.

- Ability
to make decisions and answer questions based on one’s professional
knowledge.
- Understanding
of matters that should be referred to the principal.
- Deal
professionally with unexpected and frequent interruptions.
- Make
timely routine decisions within the scope of the duties of the position.

Physical Effort
- Must
be able to travel between buildings and classrooms.
- Requires
periods of standing and bending, stooping, lifting, and sitting on the
floor.
- Must
be able to lift up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Must
be able to read printed directions, in English, from various constituents,
including students, parents, and co-workers.
- Normal
hand eye coordination.
- Must
be able to use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or reach for objects.
